How Retailers Can Optimize Product Displays

Give Display Products the Best Light

It is no secret that strategically placed products can influence sales. Candy at the eye level of children, endcap displays with a related selection of products, and necessities placed in the back of the store forcing customers to walk through more aisles and in most cases, select more items. But, did you know that the choice of lighting in retail environments can also be a player in the strategy of increasing sales? LED lights give retailers the capability to enhance product displays while keeping costs low and increasing sales—thereby increasing profitability.

Generally, LEDs are thought to be too expensive but as LED technology gains economies of scale the price gap between LEDs, fluorescent and halogen fixtures is lessening. Additionally, the life span and efficiency of LEDs outweighs the gap in initial fixture costs. Today, LED lights average 50,000 – 80,000 hours of life—more than double the life span of fluorescent and halogen options. The longer life minimizes replacement bulb and maintenance labor costs.

LEDs can also cut overhead costs by producing less heat than other lighting options. By emitting less heat, compressors in refrigerated cases run less frequently and stores use air conditioning less often. This conservation of energy results in less overall overhead cost. In some states replacing traditional light fixtures with LEDs can also qualify for energy rebates.

Money can also be saved by the longer shelf life, of some foods, that LED lights provide. A University of Missouri study showed that hamburger kept under LED lights, instead of industry-standard fluorescents, lasted three to four days longer. LEDs eliminate the exposure of ultra-violet (UV) light that can cause meats to discolor. Retailers that use LED lights will not have to reduce sale prices and lower their already small margins due to premature discoloration.

In addition to using cost-effective LED fixtures to reduce energy, retailers can be certain that they are displaying merchandise in the best light possible. LEDs are available in a variety of light color temperatures which can enhance the colors of products, making items more attractive to consumers. Presenting a product in the brightest, most direct lighting isn’t always the answer. Product displays can be taken from average to exceptional by adding an LED light that provides the correct color temperature and optimal Color Rendering Index (CRI), to enhance product colors.

Color Temperature

Color temperature is measured in Kelvins and rates the color of the LED. LEDs are binned and rated on a scale from 2500K (warm white) to 6500K (cool white). To improve the appearance of products with red and orange coloring, warmer Kelvin temperatures, below 3000K, are recommended. To illuminate blues, cool white 6500K is recommended. For overall best product color appearance, 3000K-4000K (neutral white) is recommended.

Color Rendering Index

Color Rendering Index (CRI) is rated on a scale of 1 to 100. It is used to describe how accurately a color appears as it would in natural sunlight. An apple displayed under lighting with a low CRI will appear bleak and washed out, while an apple displayed under LED lighting that has a CRI closer to 100 will have a crisp, vibrant and true red coloration—much like the apples in an orchard. Products will appear fresh when they are displayed with the correct color temperature and a high CRI. Fresher, more appealing food items are more likely to be quickly purchased by consumers, thus increasing sales and reducing waste.

Recent studies have shown that consumers perceive vibrant colored products to be larger or superior to the same product packaged in a more subdued color. Brighter packaging heightens the consumers’ sense of value in the product. LED lights with the correct color temperature and CRI can make every product pop off the shelf…and into the consumer’s shopping cart.
